THE Australian Broadcasting Authority has granted the Upper Hunter's community radio station a licence to broadcast permanently on 101.7 and 107.3 on the FM band.

Mt Helen FM was formed five years ago, operates two transmitters and has studio facilities in Willow Tree and Muswellbrook.

President Gary Zylmans said yesterday that Mt Helen FM switched from weekend test transmissions to 24-hour-a-day broadcasting last November, with about 12 volunteer announcers catering to four local government areas.

The broadcasting authority said Mt Helen FM was the only applicant for the community radio licence for Muswellbrook and Murrurundi.

`The applicant satisfied the ABA it would meet the existing and perceived future needs of the general community in the Muswellbrook region,' authority chairman Professor David Flint said yesterday in a statement.
